Chevy EV Tax Credit in Ohio: What to Know in 2026
Understand the expired federal vehicle credits, charging deadlines, current offers, and separate vehicle loan interest deduction before you buy.
Last reviewed:
The short answer
Federal new, used, and commercial clean vehicle tax credits are unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. The federal charging equipment credit also ended for equipment placed in service after June 30, 2026.
If you are shopping for a Chevrolet EV in Ohio today, do not include the former federal vehicle credit in your purchase budget. Other opportunities may still affect your costs, including current Chevrolet offers, utility programs, and a separate deduction for qualifying vehicle loan interest. Each has its own requirements. At Tim Lally Chevrolet, we can help you review available vehicles and current purchase or lease offers. A qualified tax professional can determine whether a tax provision applies to your situation.

What Changed for Federal EV Tax Credits?
Federal legislation enacted in July 2025 accelerated the end dates for several vehicle and charging incentives.
| Federal provision | Current status |
|---|---|
| New Clean Vehicle Credit, Section 30D | Unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025 |
| Previously-Owned Clean Vehicle Credit, Section 25E | Unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025 |
| Qualified Commercial Clean Vehicle Credit, Section 45W | Unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025 |
| Charging equipment credit, Section 30C | Unavailable for equipment placed in service after June 30, 2026 |
These deadlines apply to the federal provisions listed above. Manufacturer discounts and dealership offers have separate terms.
Can a Vehicle Delivered in 2026 Still Qualify Under the Earlier Rules?
A vehicle delivered in 2026 may qualify under the earlier rules if it was acquired by September 30, 2025, and all other requirements are satisfied.
The IRS explains that acquisition requires a binding written contract and a payment by the deadline. Taking possession can occur later. A reservation alone should not be treated as proof that a purchase qualifies.
If this situation applies to you, have a tax professional review your contract, payment records, delivery date, and required seller documentation.

Does Leasing a Chevy EV Still Provide a Federal Credit?
A new EV lease should not be assumed to include savings from the former federal commercial clean vehicle credit. Section 45W ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025.
Under the earlier program, the credit generally belonged to the eligible vehicle owner, often the leasing company. Any benefit offered to the customer depended on the lease terms.
Current lease promotions may still be available. Ask for an itemized quote showing the amount due at signing, monthly payment, mileage allowance, fees, and any conditional incentives.

Does Ohio Offer a State EV Purchase Rebate?
Ohio does not currently list a general statewide consumer EV purchase rebate in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ohio incentives directory. Utility and other local programs are separate and may have limited service areas.
Check the requirements for your home address before including a rebate in your budget. A program available elsewhere in Ohio may not apply to a household in Moreland Hills, Cleveland, or Warrensville Heights.
Can You Still Claim a Home EV Charger Tax Credit?
The federal Section 30C credit is unavailable for charging equipment placed in service after June 30, 2026.
For qualifying residential equipment placed in service by that deadline, the credit could cover 30% of eligible costs, up to $1,000 per qualifying item. Requirements included installation at the taxpayer’s main home in an eligible low-income or non-urban census tract.
Buying equipment before the deadline was not enough if it was placed in service afterward. Ask a tax professional to review an earlier installation before claiming the credit.

Are Ohio Utility Charger Programs Still Available?
Some Ohio utilities offer charging-related programs, but eligibility depends on the utility serving your property.
For example, Firelands Electric Cooperative currently advertises a $250 Level 2 charger rebate for eligible existing members. Its published installation window runs from July 1, 2026, through June 15, 2027, with equipment requirements and limited funding. This is a cooperative member program, not a statewide rebate.
Before purchasing charging equipment, ask your electric utility about:
- Current rebates or charging-rate programs.
- Eligible charger models.
- Installation and inspection requirements.
- Application deadlines and available funding.
Have a qualified electrician assess your home’s electrical capacity and installation needs.
Could a Chevy EV Qualify for the Car Loan Interest Deduction?
A qualifying new vehicle purchase may be eligible for a separate federal deduction for vehicle loan interest during tax years 2025 through 2028.
The maximum annual deduction is $10,000 of qualifying interest. It is available to eligible taxpayers who itemize and those who take the standard deduction. Income phaseouts begin above modified adjusted gross income of $100,000, or $200,000 for joint filers.
Requirements include a qualifying personal-use vehicle, eligible financing originated after December 31, 2024, and final assembly in the United States. Used vehicles and lease payments do not qualify. A deduction reduces taxable income; it does not provide an equal-dollar reduction in the vehicle’s price or tax bill.

Which Chevrolet EVs Have U.S. Final Assembly?
Chevrolet identifies the 2026 Silverado EV as assembled at Factory ZERO in Michigan. Chevrolet identifies Equinox EV production at Ramos Arizpe, Mexico. These assembly locations matter because North American assembly alone does not satisfy the deduction’s U.S. final-assembly requirement.
Verify the exact vehicle using its window label and VIN. Assembly location alone does not establish eligibility for the deduction.
